Beavers Bend State Park

For a day away from the city, outdoorsy families can consider a trip to Beavers Bend State Park in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma. A three-hour drive makes this the furthest destination on the list, but a range of activities included swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, camping, river floats, horseback riding and some of the most scenic views around make the trip worth it.

Nearby Glen Rose, TX offers a variety of things to do for dinosaur lovers including tracking dinosaur footprints on the banks of the Paluxy River at Dinosaur Valley State Park. After picnicking in the park and taking in the sites, families can also visit the Dinosaur World Texas museum or the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.

Families visiting the Dallas area between May and early July can take a quick trip by car to Lavender Ridge Farms in nearby Gainesville, TX. During the lavender season, the farm offers pick-your-own opportunities, great photo backdrops, and a café for a nice lunch with the whole family after a day outside.
